AS & A2 Levels

Craig Davies and Katarzyna Dybowska

A Levels provide an academic route that often leads to Higher Education and degree or higher level qualifications. You may also be able to combine your A Levels with other qualifications at the College.

AS & A2 Levels

A REAL step up

From Mathematics to Media, Physics to Psychology, or Art to Accounting, you can choose from an extensive range of A Levels. We currently offer around 30 AS Levels, most of which can be taken through to A2 Level, giving you a real opportunity to progress to Higher Education or improve your
career prospects significantly.

We will help you choose your A Level subjects based on your existing qualifications, subjects you enjoy or a career in which you’re interested. Each subject is taught within a specialist area of the College, using up-todate equipment, and you’ll find course tutors approachable, enthusiastic and committed to helping you gain the best results. You might like to consider new subjects you haven’t studied before, such as environmental studies, law, economics, media studies, sociology and more.

Other qualifications

Alongside your AS Levels you may be able to mix and match other qualifications such as BTEC National Awards and Certificates. Where learners do not have GCSEs in English or Mathematics they will have the opportunity to work towards accreditation of these skills in Maths, English and IT, and there may be an opportunity to take Adult Numeracy or Literacy exams. These are important skills recognised both by universities and employers.

At Booth Lane there is also the opportunity to study further subjects at local schools. Please ask about our 'cluster programmes' at our Open Events or at your interview.

How to choose your A Level subjects:

  1. What do you want to do after A levels? Do you have a particular career in mind? Do you want to study for a degree?
  2. Certain careers and degrees will call for certain subjects. If you aren’t sure, ask a member of our Advice and  Guidance team, who are here to help you.
  3. If you want to progress to Higher Education, read the university prospectuses in our careers library or look at the UCAS website: www.ucas.co.uk. They will often give special requirements.
  4. What have you enjoyed doing at GCSE level? Which subjects have you got the best grades in? (You may need particular GCSE grades to study certain A level subjects.)
  5. Choose a subject that you’re really interested in. Each year, you’ll be taught for up to 160 hours in this subject, and will spend more time studying on your own.
  6. Find out about new subjects that you haven’t studied before.
  7. Take a look at the following pages – there’s a wide range of subjects to choose from

Enrichment programme

As well as the main academic programme, you’ll also be expected to take part in the College Enrichment Programme, which offers a wide range of activities such as sign language, sports, drumming, driving test theory and many more.

Personal tutor

During your time at College, you’ll be assigned a personal tutor, who will be responsible for monitoring your academic progress. You’ll attend a tutorial meeting every week and part of this time will be allocated to group activities, such as recognising your best learning style, study skills, revision skills, careers education, financial matters and much more. The other part will be dedicated to an individual progress review, enabling your tutor to make sure you’re on track to get the best grades possible.

Further subjects

At Northampton, you may be able to study further subjects at local schools though the cluster arrangements in place. Please ask about these at our Open Events or at your interview.

At Daventry the programme is delivered through the Daventry Learning Partnership with delivery shared between the College, William Parker and Danetre.

Further subjects may also be available through evening classes – please refer to the part-time course directory for details. For your copy, call us on 0845 300 4401.

Subjects and Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement to study on the full-time A Level programme is 5 GCSE’s at Grade C or above, a BTEC qualification at Merit grade or the equivalent. Some A Levels require a GCSE in a certain subject and at a certain grade.
