Wendy Bukuru

CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Working with Children & Young People

Wendy had been a full-time mother before deciding she wanted to learn new skills and become a childminder.

“I wanted a career that would fit in with my young family and knew I would need to retrain – child-minding seemed like a perfect option. When I started looking at the different courses though I began to get really excited about what I could learn and started to think about becoming a teacher instead. I came along to the College’s Open Event and spoke to the childcare teachers. They told me all about the various courses. I eventually decided on the CACHE Level 3 Diploma as the course was very varied. As soon as I started studying I began to open my eyes and realise there was so much more to caring for children than I’d first thought. I never realised I’d be learning about a child’s nutritional needs, their different developmental stages and ways in which I could help them reach their full potential. I had so much fun and learnt so very much on the course.”

“As I progressed on the programme I started to think about working with children with special needs as I felt like I could really make a difference and would find the career so rewarding. I will be progressing on to university and looking for work in a nursery so that I can build up my work experience at the same time. I am really looking forward to achieving my dreams in the future.”

Shabana Yeasmin

Bangladesh-born Shabana moved to Britain eight years ago. She first came to college on a part-time ESOL course and progressed to the full time CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Childcare, for which she achieved an A. ‘I was a full-time housewife before and was really keen to gain qualifications. As an adult learner, starting college was a massive change and a bit daunting, but everyone in my class was friendly, and the teachers were great – they’d always take extra time to spend with me if I didn’t understand something.’ Shabana has secured a job as a Teaching Assistant in a local school, and in the future would like to return to college to complete a teaching qualification. ‘Coming to College has changed my life. A few years ago I found it difficult understanding English, and now I’m contemplating a career in teaching!’

Sima

Sima Salamat

Sima did not speak any English when she first came to the UK from Iran in 1999. However, determined to communicate and fit in to her new way of life, Sima completed an NVQ at another local college and progressed on to the BTEC National Certificate in Health Studies at Northampton College. She was dedicated to her studies and, despite having to overcome some health issues, became the first person in the group to pass the course in one year.

Sima is now studying dental nursing while working as a volunteer at Milton Keynes Hospital.
