Natasha Brown

For Natasha the e2e programme was a stepping stone onto a brighter future. She says the confidence and skills she has gained since starting college have been life changing.

‘I had quite a bad experience at school and left when I was 15. I was lucky to be able to complete my GCSEs at a local outreach centre but deep down I knew I wanted to become a psychiatric nurse and that meant gaining more qualifications. It was a bit scary but I enrolled onto the e2e course so I could progress onto more advanced programmes. At first I struggled to make friends but the teachers were so supportive and understanding, especially of my personal issues. They made allowances if my home life impacted on my studies and gave me a real confidence boost. I started settling in and enjoying myself. I felt I’d been given a different outlook and belief I could achieve my dreams.’

As part of the programme Natasha took part in group discussions, presentations, CV writing sessions and basic English and Maths classes. ‘It’s quite varied which is good because you gain skills in lots of different areas. They organise class trips and visits too for those who are able to go. You get to mix with people who have had similar experiences as you which is good because you don’t feel so alone.’

After finishing the course Natasha moved onto the Introduction to Vocational Studies programme which combined different subjects including ICT and health and social care. She is now taking a year out before returning to specialise in health studies.

‘To become a psychiatric nurse would be a dream. I am even thinking about going to university after college which shows how far I’ve come. That would have never entered my mind before. I am now focused on a career that enables me to help other people. I am a different person and loving it.’
