Summary of course
This course is designed for students wishing to progress to specialising in designing and working with accessories within the fashion industry and will cover jewellery, footwear, belt and bag design. It is made up of a variety of units which aim to develop design and construction skills as well as introducing students to visual merchandising, branding and art direction.
The course runs over two years and will include opportunities to organise fashion shows, write about fashion, meet people working in the fashion industry and taking part in relevant and useful work experience.
The teachers on this course are a blend of experienced teachers and industry professionals and there are opportunities to top-up the HND to a full degree at the end of two years.
What will I study?
During the first year of the programme you will study a variety of units in subjects which may include:
- Computer Aided Design
- Accessory design
- Print making
- Visual merchandising
- Technical processes
and you will get the chance to create a fashion collection as part of an individual project. You will also study the context of fashion and learn about the role of fashion as a creative industry and the jobs available within it.
In the second year of the course you will extend your professional development through a combination of units including:
- Branding and identity
- Art direction
- Jewellery design
with opportunities for a creative industries placement, continued fashion studies and project management.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through practical and technical projects throughout each year of the programme. There are currently no exams.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for you if you have studied art and design or fashion design at Level 3 or can demonstrate the necessary design skills prior to enrolment and who are aiming to work in the fashion industry either in design or in one of the many other creative industries linked to fashion.
Progression and Career Opportunities
Graduates of the HND Fashion Accessories will be able to progress to looking for employment in the fashion industry or to continue their academic studies by progressing to the second or third year of a degree.
Entry Requirements for new students
48 Ucas points and GCSE English and maths at Grade 9-4
Students applying for art courses are required to bring with them to interview a portfolio of art work demonstrating their skills and particular interested in art. This can include GCSE art work and personal work produced at home.
All applicants will be invited in to the college to meet the team and to find out more about the course. In most cases an interview will be held and you will be required to present a portfolio of work to demonstrate interest and level of ability in the design field.
