Summary of course

The qualification is for students wanting to pursue a career in construction by progressing directly to employment as a civil engineering technician or to higher education. The qualification is intended to meet the educational base for registration as a technician, for example with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), once you are in employment. This qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will allow students to progress to further education, or directly to employment or an Apprenticeship in the construction sector.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is via a mixture of BTEC externally set and marked exams, BTEC externally set tasks set and marked and completed under supervised conditions, and a number of internally graded exams/assessments.

Your Study Programme

If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can. All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade C (4) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses). Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career. Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.

Who is this course for?

The course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of Construction and Civil Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 qualification in Construction in the Built Environment.

Progression and Career Opportunities

Progression from this programme leads to the Higher National Certificate, a Higher Apprenticeship, University or employment as a civil engineering technician. Specific areas of work could include specialist areas such as:

  • civil engineering technician
  • civil engineering design technician
  • civil engineering surveying technician
  • construction project technician
  • public health engineering technician.

Entry Requirements for new students

  • GCSEs at grade A* - B in Mathematics and English Language and:
    • At least two more GCSEs at Grade A* - C preferably including Science or:
    • A related BTEC Level 2 Engineering or construction qualification at Merit Grade and plus GCSE Mathematics Grades A* - B and GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above.

Interview Requirements

Please bring your interview letter and arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.

General Info (materials required for the course)

Students aged 19-23 at the start of the course will pay an exam registration fee of approximately £185 payable at enrolment.

There may be opportunities to take part in trips and visits as part of your course. The approximate cost for this is £40, payable at enrolment.

Students will also be required to purchase overalls and safety boots for the workshop activities and these can cost approximately £60.

Course fee information

All Students will need to enter or register for their course qualification either by examination entry or Board Registration. The course tutor will advise you how to enter or register for your qualification and of the College deadline. All late entries are subject to a late entry fee.

The following fees will be payable in full:-

16-18 year olds:

  • All re-sits except first re-sit of GCSE Mathematics and English
  • Unauthorised absences from any examination entered
  • Any examination/registration unsupported by your subject tutor
  • Late examination/registration entries
  • Trip/materials/equipment/uniform fees

19 years or over:

  • Level 1 course: Examination/registratiofees*
  • Level 2 course: Examination/registratiofees*
  • Second Full Level 3 course: You may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay for the course fees**
  • Level 4 course: Loans may be availabl**
  • All Levels: Trip/materials/equipment/uniform fees

Overseas Students:

  • £6,750 tuition fees in Year 1 of a 2-year course
  • £6,750 tuition fees in Year 2 of a 2-year course
  • £350 non-refundable Examination/registration fee in Year 1
