Sociology - AS/A2 Level
One-Two years
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including English Language at Grade B.
Course Content
Sociology is the study of societies; how they shape people’s ideas and social behaviour and how, in turn, people interact with and change the societies in which they live. If you’re curious about how society works and changes over time and the influence it has on your life, Sociology may be the subject for you.
In Year 1, you’ll look at core themes of culture, socialisation and identity, understanding the influences that different areas of society (e.g. the media, families, education) have on us. You will also study the roles that religion, belief and spirituality play in society and the lives of individuals, giving you an opportunity to reflect on your own experiences and how our personal beliefs help shape our identities. In Year 2, you’ll study Crime & Deviance, understanding what motivates people to commit criminal and deviant acts and how society responds to this. You will also examine Social Inequality, understanding why and how some people experience inequality, based on themes of gender, social class, age and ethnicity.
Throughout both years, you will also study the ways in which sociological research is conducted and interpreted.
