Access to Higher Education - Science

One year modular course

Entry Requirements

This programme is designed to enable mature students, who may have no formal qualifications, to gain entry to university. People who have been out of education for some time but have gained life-experience and now want to return to study are welcomed. There are no formal entry requirements but you should have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills.

All applicants must have:

• Spent some time away from formal education

• Good literacy and numeracy skills

• The ability to cope with the high demand of the course

• The time and motivation to undertake a substantial amount

of home study, in addition to attending the classes.

Course Content

Science (Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Environmental Studies)

Subjects offered on each pathway are only suggestions and may change.

In addition all pathways include units to develop the skills and knowledge to:

• Manage your time

• Study

• Write essays and reports

• Undertake research projects

• Make presentations.

For most university courses it is necessary to have GCSE English C or above. Sometimes Mathematics is required too. Primary teaching training requires English, Mathematics and Science. You will have the opportunity to study these as extra courses alongside the Access programme. Applicants are advised to make enquires with the universities before starting on a course.

All pathways are located at Booth Lane. In addition, a nursing pathway is offered at Daventry and another delivered between Lower Mounts and Booth Lane.

A Humanities and Social Science pathway is also offered at Daventry. Students on all pathways will study IT, Study Skills and GCSE equivalence as part of their course. This course is validated by AIM Awards and the QAA.

Next Step

This programme is recognised by all UK universities and Higher Education bodies as an entry qualification for degree level study.
