Full-time course search

Higher National Diplomas

Have you always wanted to progress to Higher Education? Would you like the option of going to University? Are you looking for a course that will kick-start your career? Do you prefer more practically-based learning? Would you like a flexible approach that fits in with your lifestyle? If so, you should consider studying on one of the Higher National Diplomas offered at Northampton College in conjunction with the University of Northampton.

Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)

Whereas traditional degrees tend to concentrate on academic skills, HNDs focus on practical ‘learning by doing’ experience, giving you the skills to put your knowledge to effective use in a particular career. Recognised and highly valued by industry both in the UK and overseas, HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks, which means they’re well suited to those who don’t like exams or who are less confident in essay writing. HNDs usually take two years to complete on a full-time basis, but may be studied part-time, which takes longer.

A Higher National Diploma provides you with the practical experience that will start you off in your chosen career. These popular and vocationally-relevant programmes offer an alternative HE pathway and tend to require fewer UCAS points on entry.

Where will I study?

For many years, Northampton College has worked in partnership with The University of Northampton to develop a range of practically and vocationally-oriented Higher Education courses. Higher National Diplomas are taught at Northampton College, although you will actually be a student of The University of Northampton.

You may be offered a place in the University’s Halls of Residence and travel a short distance each day to attend your classes, although courses are usually run intensively over three weekdays, providing time for study and leisure.

How do I apply?

You’ll need to apply through the Universities and College Admissions Service, known as UCAS, for all Higher National Diplomas studied at Northampton College. You can get UCAS forms from your school or local library. For more information on Higher National Diplomas, pop into Northampton College and pick up a leaflet, or our staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Alternatively phone the University of Northampton on 0800 358 2232.

What will I need?

All applications are handled by The University of Northampton through the UCAS system. To be accepted on a programme, you’ll need points equivalent to an A Level Grade D or above, or a pass at BTEC Level 3 or equivalent. For HND Photography and HND Theatre you’ll need a GCSE at Grade C or above in English. Minimum age on entry is 18.

What can I do afterwards?

These courses are designed to enable you to continue to a third year of study at the University of Northampton to ‘top-up’ your qualification to a degree in your chosen subject area (giving you two separate qualifications over the three years of study). Alternatively, with the skills you will have acquired on the HND, you may be able to progress directly into employment in your chosen vocation. In addition, you may choose to seek further specialist training courses within your chosen industry sector.

HND options for 2013/14:

• HND Photography

• HND Digital Film-Making

• HND Music Production

• HND Theatre Practice
