Hair, Beauty & Associated Therapies

If you’re interested in a career in hair or beauty, we offer real opportunities to succeed, with courses available in Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing, Complementary Therapies and Nail Technology. Our wide range of programmes and extensive training facilities can prepare you for a highly-successful and enjoyable career – from managing or running your own salon to becoming a make-up specialist, nail technician or complementary therapist. If you have the ambition, our highly-qualified and dedicated staff, with their wealth of experience, can help you achieve your goal.

Courses are designed to meet the needs of those leaving school, in employment, changing career or returning to work after a break. You will be given every opportunity to develop your professional skills through tuition and supervision, and working on members of the public within a real working environment.

The Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Team has an excellent track record in achieving success in national competitions. We work closely with local employers, such as Whittlebury Hall, that provide work experience and employment opportunities for our students. The Hair and Beauty Reception areas in College cater for approximately 5,000 customers from the general public every academic year.

The College’s brand new state-of-the-art Hair and Beauty salons at Lower Mounts in Northampton Town Centre and in Daventry offer a full range of treatments at competitive prices. This fabulous facility offers a unique opportunity to learn the latest techniques in a first-class 21st century environment.

Our specialist resources include:

• A commercial hair and nail studio

• Four hairdressing, four beauty therapy and one nail bar training salons, all equipped with the latest teaching and learning technology

• At Badby Road West in Daventry there are four training salons for hairdressing and beauty therapy

• All products used in the salon are professionally-recognised and some are available for retail sale.

Enrichment programme

As well as the main academic programme, you'll also be expected to take part in the College Enrichment Programme, which offers a wide range of activities such as sign language, sports, drumming, driving test theory and many more.

Fullam Shah

One of the things Fullam likes most about working in the beauty industry is being able to relax people so that they leave her treatments feeling happy and energised. “I love meeting new people which is a big element of beauty therapy and a part of the course I really enjoyed. Working in the College’s training salon is great too and gives you experience of how to deal with clients and deliver good customer service. People would sometimes come in all stressed but they’d leave feeling calm and I loved making them feel like that. I started at college on the Level 2 beauty programme and then I progressed on to Level 2 and Level 3 Complementary Therapy so I feel like I have been able to gain a good amount of knowledge in various areas of beauty. We learnt about nails and manicures, make-up and massage techniques. The courses were really in-depth. For example, I knew we’d be learning about the human body but even I didn’t realise to what extent. We were taught about anatomy to quite a high level which I don’t think people appreciate. It’s not just about make-up and looking pretty, you have to really know your stuff and the course gives you the basic understanding you need.” “There was a mix of practical and theory in our lessons and I liked being able to take what we’d learnt and practise on real-life clients in The Salon NC. The assignments were sometimes quite challenging, particularly at Level 3, but I knew I was learning the skills I needed and I was never scared to ask the tutors for help.” Fullam has just finished working Part-time at Kingsley Health and Beauty Salon and is currently applying for various beauty therapy roles. “I eventually want to run my own business”.

Personal tutor

During your time at College, you'll be assigned a personal tutor, who will be responsible for monitoring your academic progress. You'll attend a tutorial meeting every week and part of this time will be allocated to group activities, such as recognising your best learning style, study skills, revision skills, careers education, financial matters and much more. The other part will be dedicated to an individual progress review, enabling your tutor to make sure you're on track to get the best grades possible.
