Summary of course

The HND Journalism course is a hands on practical experience which will prepare you for the demands of a challenging yet hugely rewarding industry.

Journalists are no longer expected to just be able to write copy, nowadays they are required to write, film, edit and present their pieces across a range of platforms including print, TV, radio and web.

The course is designed to provide you with the practical skills which will enable you to become an asset to any news outlet.

The college has excellent links with local media providers such as the BBC as well as a strong working relationship with the University of Northampton who deliver the degree in Journalism. The college has a full working TV studio including Green Screen, as well as a fully functioning soundproofed radio studio. In addition we also have a large number of Mac suites which include all the software that is used within the industry today.

How is the course assessed?

Through the submission of both:

  • practical work
  • written work You will be assessed on an A-E basis.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for you if you are interested in moving in to Broadcast, Print or Web-based journalism and have already started publishing your own work, whether that be on-line or in print and you wish to gain a Level 5 qualification in creative media.

Progression and Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the course can either progress directly in to the industry through contacts made from work placements on the course. Some students choose to complete the one year Top Up course at the University of Northampton whereby your HND will contribute to a full BA Degree in Journalism. Although Journalism is the main focus, some students choose to move in to careers in Advertising and Marketing as well as video production and page design.

Entry Requirements for new students

Generally a Level 3 qualification is required at a grade equivalent to 48 UCAS points or above. This could be as two or more Alevels at grade D or above, or as a BTEC Extended Diploma (or other similar qualification) at PPP or Diploma (or other similar qualification) at MP>. Successful applicants will also be required to have achieved GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or above.

In circumstances where an applicant has not taken these qualifications (for example, for an applicant aged 21 or over) an offer will made based on the application, consideration of relevant experience and, in some cases, an interview.

Interview Requirements

You must bring your interview letter to your appointment and arrive 15 minutes before your interview is due to take place.

You will be expected to bring along with you samples of your work completed on your previous courses as well as any work that you have had published. A digital portfolio of your work will be considered.

General Info (materials required for the course)

Students enrolling on the course will be able to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Suite at a vastly reduced cost which will enable you to practice your skills at home. Whilst this is not a direct requirement of the course, being able to access the software packages at home and practice the skills you have learnt in class will have a huge impact on your grades.

Course fee information

The course fee is £6,165 per annum which can be paid through a Student Loan.
