Summary of course
A combination of practical and theory based activities and assignments. This course covers two pathways under one Level 2 Music study programme:
Music Technology: This route is designed for students who want to produce their own music using software and recording studio equipment. Students will learn to produce their own tracks using industry-standard music software and a range of other music technology equipment. They will produce tracks as a part of the course assignments. They will also learn about releasing music and will have access to recording studios. Music technology students will also be expected to take part in events and performances.
Music Performance: This route is designed for students who want to become performing musicians. Students will learn to perform as a part of a band and they will take part in a series of gigs as a part of the course assignments. They will also learn about organising events and participating in multi disciplinary arts projects.
Both groups will also study basic keyboard skills to support both Performance and Production disciplines. Contextual Project work will also be encountered, including research based study and practical application. Reference to working in the music industry and an understanding of collaborating with other media and performing arts forms. Functional Skills or GCSE classes English and Mathematics (for those without a Grade 4(C) are also included.
The method of learning is a mixture of written work, discussion sessions and practical work. Practical work will be done both individually and in groups. All units are internally assessed through practical performance and written coursework and they are moderated by an external examiner. The final Unit grade determines the overall grade achieved by the student. The coursework and units up to the final assessment are graded at satisfactory pass, high pass and very high pass, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level.

How is the course assessed?
All units are continuously assessed throughout the year through a range of assignments and time constrained tests. These are assessed internally and externally, here at the college. The assignments will be a mixture of written work, exams, presentations, computer-based composition and live musical performances.
In the first term written work will mostly be completed using workbooks in class and time constrained testing. In the second term students will create their own written work using their own formats. In the third term some assessment will be via 1-1 interviews (Q & A).
Your Study Programme
If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can. All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade 4 (C) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses). Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career. Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for you if you have an interest in either entering employment in the music industry or progressing to a Level 3 qualification in Music Practice or Music Technology and wish to gain a Level 2 qualification in music.
Progression and Career Opportunities
This course will give you the necessary qualifications to apply for a Level 3 qualification such as an Extended Diploma (including UAL Extended Diploma in Music: Performance or Technology pathways). Alternatively, you could seek:

Entry Requirements for new students
|Entry and Foundation:||GCSEs, mainly 2-1 (F/G) grades. Satisfactory school reference*|
|Level 1:||Four GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above|
|Level 2:||Four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above|
|Level 3 BTEC Courses or equivalent:||Four GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C)|
|Level 3 A Levels:||Five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including English and maths|
|Level 4/5||A Level 3 qualification such as: A Levels, BTEC Level 3, Access to HE, Advanced Apprenticeship; equivalent of 48 UCAS points|
|Specific Course Requirements:||Standard Level 2 entry requirements including GCSE English|
*All applicants will be invited in for interview.
Equivalent qualifications will be considered except where English has been studied as a second language and is required at GCSE grade 3 (D).
You must bring your interview letter to your appointment with you and arrive 15 minutes before your interview is due to take place.
At point of interview please bring along a five hundred word report on why you have chosen this course. This may be either hand written or word processed. Please bring along evidence of musical ability. This may be in the form or recordings, CDs, etc.
