Summary of course

This introductory qualification is the first step towards becoming a qualified teacher or trainer in the Learning and Skills Sector. It is recognised and valued nationally by employers and so if you want to go into teaching or training, it is an excellent qualification to hold. The course is delivered through practical activities, discussions, presentations and reflective practice. The Award replaced the established ‘PTLLS' qualification.

Topics include:

  • Student needs
  • Reflective practice
  • Roles and responsibilities of teachers
  • Session planning
  • Inclusive learning and support for students
  • Teaching and learning approaches
  • Assessment methods

Following this course you could progress to a Diploma or Certificate in Education and Training, if you have an appropriate teaching or training role and appropriate subject specialist, English and maths qualifications.

Find about more career opportunities and expected starting salaries by clicking on the 'What Can I Earn?' section of our website.

How is the course assessed?

You are required to complete both theory and practical assignments and this includes delivering a thirty minute teaching session to your fellow students. All elements of the assessments must be passed, in order to complete the qualification.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for you if you have just started in a teaching, training or tutoring role or if you have an interest in teaching in the future and wish to gain a Level 3 qualification.

Entry Requirements for new students

You must show the ability to work at Level 3 in the assignments and this will be assessed during the advice and guidance session. You do not have to be teaching or training during the course but should be aware that you would need an appropriate qualification and/or experience in the subject you wish to deliver, for any future teaching or training positions.

You will be required to attend an advice and guidance session so that you can learn more about the course and to check that the course is right for you. You will be given a short English assessment so that we can ensure that you will be able to cope with the level of study required.
