Qualifications on offer: Level 5 Teaching Literacy (English) Professional Development Unit

Summary of course

This professional development unit is part of the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English: Literacy. The unit is called Literacy Teaching and Learning and is the unit which demonstrates effective planning and practice in teaching English.

Throughout the programme, you will be required to demonstrate an ability to transfer new knowledge and research into your own practice, in order to develop your students' skills and success.

Delivery is for ten weeks and practice is then developed and assessed throughout the rest of the academic year.

Topics include:

Planning inclusive literacy and language teaching and learning Carrying out initial and diagnostic assessment of students Selecting and delivering literacy and language teaching and resources appropriate to individual students' needs Using assessment of students to aid their development Reflecting critically and developing practiceCity and Guilds Level 5 Literacy Teaching and Learning Unit.

Following completion of this unit, you could progress onto the full Level 5 Specialist Teaching Diploma (English).

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through session planning documents, four teaching observations, teaching and learning materials and resources, a written report, case studies, a reflective journal and evaluation of practice.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for you if you teach English (students taught must be aged 14 or above) and normally you would have completed a full generic teaching qualification prior to taking this unit.

Entry Requirements for new students

You must be qualified to Level 3 in English/Literacy or be able to demonstrate Level 3 Literacy skills. You should demonstrate a satisfactory level of study skills, in order to be successful in studying at Level 5. You need access to at least 50 hours of teaching English to students aged 14 or above and at more than one level, during the course.

You will be required to attend an interview and undertake an initial assessment of your literacy/language skills (as appropriate)to make sure that you have the potential to succeed on this Level 5 programme.
