Northampton College has teamed up with top businesses experts and The University of Northampton to host a free workshop for local employers to learn about the new Apprenticeship Levy.

1037 50536The levy, which comes into effect on 6 April 2017, requires all UK employers with a pay bill of over £3 million each year to invest in apprenticeships.

With first payments due to be taken through the PAYE system in May, Northamptonshire employers will have chance to find out exactly how the levy will affect their business during the College’s workshop at John Lewis’ Grange Park depot on Thursday, 30 March.

Northampton College has partnered with levy-payer John Lewis, accountancy specialists Grant Thornton, legal experts Howes Percival, and The University of Northampton to stage the event, which will include a number of keynote speakers and a question and answers session.

James Whybrow, assistant principal of Northampton College, said: “Apprenticeships have been proven to contribute to an improved skillset in the workplace which in turn boosts long-term economic growth and productivity.

“As an experienced Apprenticeships provider, we believe the government’s new levy is a positive move and will increase the investment in training by UK employers through Apprenticeships. However, we do understand there is still uncertainty from employers about how it will all work.

“Whether employers choose to spend the levy on their existing employees or take on new apprentices, they will need to make changes to their business in relation to how they employ apprentices, how they pay their levy and spend their voucher, and how they manage their staff development and training.

“We are delighted that our free workshop will offer a chance for local employers to have all their questions answered by the experts.”

Northampton College worked with more than 800 businesses across a range of sectors last year, delivering Apprenticeships and industry-training in the workplace. A total of 1,136 students successfully completed an Apprenticeship with Northampton College in 2015-16.

The Apprenticeship Levy workshop will take place on: Thursday, 30 March, 8.30am to 12pm at John Lewis, Grange Park, Cheaney Drive, Northampton NN4 5FB. It is suitable for colleagues who lead on HR, training and professional development, and finance.
