Celebration Day for Hairdressing Apprentices
Mythical fairies, a Mad Hatter and vampire inspired hairstyles were showcased on stage, as budding young hairdressers demonstrated the range of fantastic skills and techniques they have learned over the course of the year.
Seven Northampton College Level 3 Apprentice hairdressers, all of whom work in local hair salons, took part in the Celebration Day on Monday 21 June at the College site at Lower Mounts in front of friends and family, assessors and employers.
The students competed in two mini competitions, producing a long hair up style as well as a cut and colour – and there were demonstrations of how day styles could be transformed into evening party styles in just 15 minutes. Avant Garde interpretations were also shown off before the apprentices were all presented with certificates of achievement.
Carol Alexander, Employee Development Executive at the Northampton College Business Centre said ‘These apprentices all have jobs in busy salons, so there’s little time for preparation for this type of show. This Celebration Day has allowed them to really go to town with their styles, at the same time commending their achievements and professionalism. I’m so proud of the standard of work they are now capable of, and wish them every success in their future careers.’
Charlotte Douglas, 19 from Desborough has worked at Willow Hair Design in Kettering for three and a half years. She won the long hair up style with her Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland inspired look. Charlotte said ‘I got here first thing this morning and it was all really manic as I had three quite complicated looks to finish. Everything always comes together in the end though and I’m really pleased with the way my styles turned out. An event like this is a great way to finish the year – it’s a culmination of the hard work everyone’s put in throughout the year. I’ve developed so much on my Apprenticeship and would love to work in the fashion industry at some point in my career. But for now, I love doing what I’m doing in a company that appreciates me.’
