Curry flavour of the day

Northampton College played host to the Curry Chef of the Year 2010 competition, a part of the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards, a scheme devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited (NEL) to celebrate the County’s produce and drink, as well as recognising excellence within our dining venues.

The Curry Chef of the Year competition, sponsored by British Pepper & Spice is run in conjunction with the College, who opened the doors to its training facilities for the competition on Tuesday 27 July.

The team of organisers shortlisted four chefs from Nepalese, Bangladeshi and Vietnamese backgrounds, who are all employed in local restaurants. The chefs were observed throughout the two and a half hours in which they had to produce a main dish, a vegetarian option, an accompaniment and a dessert. Judging was based on hygiene, skills, preparation, product, organisation and, of course, taste!

Richard Curtis, Catering lecturer at the College and one of the competition’s judges, said ‘As a college we are always keen to encourage cooking expertise from around the world. Northamptonshire has a breadth of quality Asian restaurants and chefs so we were delighted to be able to support this event by offering the organisers use of our kitchens for the day.’

The winner will be announced at the Awards dinner on 6 October.
