Latest QAA assessment passed with flying colours

The national authority on quality and standards in higher education has awarded Northampton College with the highest possible rating on the way they deliver higher education programmes.

The national authority on quality and standards in higher education has awarded Northampton College with the highest possible rating on the way they deliver higher education programmes.

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) protects academic standards, the quality of learning opportunities, and the public information provided by universities and colleges delivering higher education.

Northampton College delivers Higher National Diplomas in the arts and a Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector that are accredited by the University of Northampton.

A team of QAA reviewers visited the College last year and gave the highest rating – a 'confidence' judgement – on its management of both standards and quality.

It also concluded that 'reliance' could be placed in the public information that the College provides

QAA reviewers identified a number of examples of good practice at the College, including:

• Clear and comprehensive programme specifications are readily available to students and staff in electronic form, and help to ensure that academic standards are explicit and understood on all courses

• The design and management of teaching, learning and assessment ensure clear relevance to real work situations, and make systematic use of formative feedback

• A purpose designed, open access Research and Study Skills module has been introduced to support students’ development of their higher education study skills

• The campus redevelopment strategy has provided many industry standard specialist facilities, which are used to enhance the professional relevance of teaching and learning

• Recent enhancements to the College website and the virtual learning environment have produced clear, comprehensive and easily navigated information sites for students and staff

• Public information is produced within the context of detailed and explicit protocols, which include a policy statement, higher education marketing operational plan and production schedule.

John Bexson Deputy Principal, Curriculum and Student Services at Northampton College comments: “This is an endorsement of the high standards that we strive to attain. The judgement is particularly welcome at this time when many students are considering studying Higher Education in Further Education settings. To be assured that the quality of the provision is high as well as being able to study locally and usually with lower fees to pay is attractive for many people”.
