lauren appleton business case study resizedThe chance to study law at university seemed a distant dream for Lauren Appleton when her GCSEs didn’t go to plan, but having undertaken a business course at Northampton College that dream is now becoming a reality.

The 20-year-old from Earls Barton is set to embark on a new chapter in her life at De Montfort University and said the turnaround in her fortunes was down to the one-to-one support she received at college.

She said: “I was able to really concentrate on my work and got much more attention from my teachers which made a big difference. I really enjoyed the legal elements of my business course and I can’t wait to study law.”

Lauren started on the Level 1 Functional Skills course and has progressed on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma, achieving the highest possible grades and earning valuable work experience with major corporate firms such as Barclays.

Lauren Porter fought a lifelong battle with dyslexia and didn’t know what an adjective was until she came to Northampton College. The 26-year-old is now a keen writer of poetry and has earned a place to study Ancient History at Edinburgh University.

Lauren’s inspirational journey has seen her tackle creative writing, English language, English literature and history as part of her Access to HE course in Humanities.

She said: “The teachers have been incredibly supportive and I’m amazed at the progress I’ve made, which has helped give me a real opportunity to get on in life. It has been hard work but it’s so rewarding. I remember crying at my computer screen as I found it so difficult and it would have been easy to walk out and give up but I got through it and earned a Distinction which was amazing.”

jodie bunting hair beauty smallHairdressing student Jodie Bunting proved she was a cut above the rest when made it through to the finals of the WorldSkills UK competition, performing against the clock under extreme pressure.

Having studied hard to pick up new techniques and a real eye for style, Jodie was able to take her skills to the next level and compete on the national stage. She said: "I love competing in national competitions as it gives you something extra to work towards on top of your training and be the best you can be. The skills I have learnt at Northampton College have given me the confidence to compete and the adrenaline rush you get is just amazing."
eli sodipe motor eng smallA chance to get up close and personal with the 1000mph Bloodhound supersonic car gave motor vehicle engineering student Eli the inspiration to work in a garage and pursue a career in the industry. The supercar paid a visit to Northampton College and Eli said: “I’ve always had a love of cars, when I was younger I would often take things apart but would never know how to put them back together. Coming to college has given me that knowledge. I have also been working in a garage outside college for two years and they have seen a real improvement in my work and my confidence has grown. The course has been really important for my future career as it has helped me to gain real life experience and practical knowledge.”
