Karen Walker's experience of the College's mentor scheme has been invaluable and helped her overcome her past experiences of bullying.
Karen said, 'Being bullied is a horrible experience. For me it started in Year 9 with the occasional teasing but developed into harsh rumours and verbal abuse which was much more frightening. By the time I reached sixth form the bullies had definitely knocked my confidence levels. My decision to come to college to study A Levels has changed all that.'
'I am much more suited to this way of learning. There is a brilliant support network available to students, like the learner mentors for example. They are great because you always have someone to talk to. College can be overwhelming and intimidating but I have always been made to feel safe and I know other learners feel the same. There is a great atmosphere about the place, everyone is friendly and welcoming.' |
