At Northampton College, we are always looking at positive ways to promote environmental improvement.
Through our college-wide ‘Go-Green Initiative’, we encourage staff and students alike to consider the impact we have as a college, and how we can do our part to create a sustainable future. Students also have the opportunity to take on a more active environmental role at college, by raising any suggestions they may have with the Northampton College Students’ Union (NCSU).
All three of our campuses were built to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. We set our architects the challenge of creating buildings that are sympathetic to the environment with as low a carbon footprint as possible.
We continue to be conscious of our energy consumption and carbon footprint, which we combat through the use of biomass boilers, a green sedum roof, photovoltaic solar panels and a helical wind turbine.
Our Booth Lane and Daventry campuses include several protected garden areas to encourage wildlife. The Lagoon at our Booth Lane campus is a protected conservation area – sealed off to encourage plant growth and wildlife.
We have also introduced four bee hives in our Daventry Campus as part of a wildlife conservation project. The Daventry Bee Project will teach young people about the important role of bees in the eco-system, including pollination, honey and beeswax production.
Waste and Recycling

All three of our campuses are easily accessible by public transport, and our Student Services team work hard to advise students on the options available.
If students would like to get the bus into college, there are a variety of bus passes that can be purchased, and we also offer help with the cost of a bus pass through the bursary.
We also have plenty of secure cycle points at all three campuses, and encourage all students to travel on foot or by bicycle where possible.
Staff that drive to and from work, or use a car for college business, are given the opportunity to donate 1p for every mile travelled to the College Tree Fund. Donations are used to plant trees on the college campuses or at community orchards/nature reserves around Northamptonshire.
As part of our Futures service, our Schools Liaison Team work closely with schools, sixth forms, academies and IAG providers across Northamptonshire and surrounding counties delivering useful and relevant information to students.
Having once again secured Matrix accreditation in 2018, we have been recognised as being able to offer impartial information to support young people to make well informed, realistic decisions about their options, education and future career choices.
As qualified and experienced careers advisors, we are passionate about raising aspirations and motivating/empowering young people by providing them with advice and guidance when making their next step and considering their future.
'Ignite the Spark' Initiative
‘Ignite the Spark’ is an exciting, evolving initiative designed to support the teaching of STEM subjects within schools by delivering an annual programme of events to excite pupils and inspire them to consider science, construction or engineering careers
Our ‘Ignite the Spark’ initiative recognises the power of partnerships between education and industry, providing pupils with the opportunity to learn directly from those actively working in STEM-related careers. By working together, we can make sure that all our young people and their parents are fully-informed about exciting career pathways.
Previously, we have run popular Science Masterclasses in collaboration with the National Space Academy, inviting groups of year 10 and 11 pupils in to college to participate in a series of space-themed workshops. Local schools have also entered students to participate in The Big Rig at the College, a low carbon challenge on a large scaffold structure, with teams of eight competing to install a solar powered water system.
In June 2019, our Booth Lane campus hosted a week-long Construction Engineering Festival. This consisted of an innovation workshop led by award-winning organisation TeenTech, a presentation from former Robot Wars winner Gabriel Stroud and a variety of STEM based taster sessions, including the return of the popular Big Rig Low Carbon Challenge.
We will continue to build upon our work within the Ignite the Spark initiative during 2020, with a focus on Digital Skills. Our upcoming ‘Creating Digital Futures’ event will help young people get a feel for the digital world that awaits them and the skills they need to acquire in order to increase their chances in the future job market.
