When my manager told me she had volunteered my name to take part in Northampton College’s Big Rig Low Carbon challenge, I actually laughed. My qualification is in Business Administration, where I feel comfortable so I never believed I’d be doing anything like this, but here I was, out of my comfort zone again.

A recent article has suggested that the robot workplace revolution currently underway means that fewer human jobs will be available in Northamptonshire in the future as automation takes hold.

This apparent susceptibility to automation is because of the particular make-up of our economic sector which has a strong emphasis on logistics and manufacturing. Actually, our region is one of the best performing in the UK in terms of productivity, although some of this is led by particularly highly productive parts of the area.

I have always been academic. I have nine GCSEs from A-C and three A Levels from A-B. I was that kid who loved school, adored homework and always had her head stuck in a book.

My mum used to worry that I was too ‘book smart’, and didn’t have enough experience in the ‘real world’ – the world of work. And she was right.
