Construction and the Built Environment

Summary of course

The qualification is for students wanting to pursue a career in construction by progressing directly to employment as a building services engineering technician or to higher education. The qualification is intended to meet the educational base for registration as a technician, for example with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) once you are in employment.

You will develop your knowledge and skills around construction methods, regulations and technologies with a particular focus on building services including; Electrical installations, Hot and cold water services, Gas, Drainage and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

What will I study?

The units you are likely to study are:

Core Units:

  • construction principles
  • construction design
  • health and safety in construction
  • construction technology
  • provision of primary services in buildings
  • building services science

All units are subject to change and may be withdrawn.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is via a mixture of BTEC externally set and marked exams, BTEC externally set tasks set and marked and completed under supervised conditions, and a number of internally graded exams/assessments.

Your Study Programme

If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can. All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade 4 (C) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses). Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career. Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.

Who is this course for?

The course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of construction and building services and wish to gain a Level 3 qualification in Construction.

Progression and Career Opportunities

Progression from this programme leads to the Higher National Certificate, a Higher Apprenticeship, University or employment as a building services technician and is ideal if you wish to enter a particular specialist area of work, such as:

  • building services engineering technician
  • building services engineering design technician
  • construction project technician
  • mechanical/electrical services technician
  • building services site engineering technician.

Entry Requirements for new students

4 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (A*-C) including maths and English or progressing students will require: GCSE in maths and English (one at grade 4 and the other at grade 3), expectation of 90% attendance, lower attendance accepted with team agreement. Pass and good record of behaviour and engagement in the course

Interview Requirements

You must bring your interview letter to your appointment and arrive 15 minutes before your interview is due to take place.

General Info (materials required for the course)

There may be opportunities to take part in trips and visits as part of your course. The approximate cost for this is £40, payable at enrolment.

Students will also be required to purchase overalls and safety boots for the workshop activities and these can cost approximately £60.
