Summary of course

This course will teach you essential skills at Level 3 to prepare you for further training within the Carpentry field of the construction environment – specialising in flooring, roofing, stairs, doors, mouldings, using machinery and planning/pricing work. You will learn about Health and Safety and the units listed below will help you to begin, or continue, your journey towards employment within the construction industry or further study to enhance your employability.

What will I study?

The units you will study are likely to include: Core units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Carry out first fix roofing and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery All units are subject to change and may be withdrawn.

Your Study Programme

If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can. All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don’t have a grade C (4) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal. Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career. Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.

This course is ideal if you have an interest in carpentry and construction and wish to gain a Level 3 qualification in Level 3 Carpentry, Joinery and Theatre/Film Set Production

Entry Requirements for new students

Entry requirements for new students - 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (A*-C). It will be a requirement to have a Level 2 Carpentry qualification to progress on to this Level 3 qualification. All applicants will be invited for interview. Equivalent qualifications will be considered.

Interview Requirements

You must bring your interview letter to your appointment and arrive 15 minutes before your interview is due to take place. Be prepared to talk about what interests you about learning about and working within the construction industry, carpentry and joinery.

You will need to have personal protective equipment such as eye protection, overalls and safety boots. We will provide you with a list before you join the course. You may be able to apply to the College Bursary Fund for help with paying for these items.
