New rules on Apprenticeship funding
The government aims to boost productivity in the UK by investing in training 3 million new apprentices by 2020. Funding rules have been simplified and some new incentives for employers are now available:
Small businesses* will only fund 10% of the cost of training an apprentice (with government funding of 90%)
Small businesses that train an apprentice aged 16-18 will pay nothing towards the cost of training (with government funding of 100%). This also applies if the apprentice is aged 19-24 and formerly in care or if they have an Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP)
In addition, all employers will receive a one-off payment of £1,000 for training an apprentice aged 16-18 (and 19-24 if the apprentice was formerly in care or has an Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP)
All apprentices are expected to attain a basic level of maths and English (at Level 1 or 2). The cost of this training will be funded by the government with no contribution from the employer.
