fire it upAmbitious young people wanting to get into the world of work have been urged to #FireItUp as part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of apprenticeships.

With National Apprenticeship Week taking place from Monday, March 4 to Friday, March 8, Northampton College is hosting ‘An Evening With Our Trailblazers’ to highlight the advantages of earning while you learn.

The event will allow prospective students to meet employers who recruit apprentices and talk to them about different career paths. Current apprentices will be on hand to discuss their experiences of combining life in the workplace with learning in a classroom environment while visitors can talk to college advisors about their hopes for the future.

Principal of Northampton College, Pat Brennan-Barrett, said: “Apprenticeships are an increasingly attractive option for young people and we are seeing more and more students opting to follow this route. It allows them to gain an invaluable insight into the world of work and combine their studies with real-life, on-the-job experience.

“We have built exceptional links with local employers and have students embedded into the likes of Cosworth, Mercedes and Church’s. We are creating the leaders and the employers of the future and these trailblazers will help up the enthusiasm of a new generation of ambitious and determined young people.”

The event will take place at the college’s Booth Lane campus on Wednesday, 6 March from 6pm to 7pm with a focus on what you need to do to become an apprentice, what careers are available and which employers are offering them.

Isobel McColgan, aged 16, is a business development apprentice within the college’s apprenticeship team.

She said: “I started looking for an apprenticeship while I was still at school and absolutely love it. I am a hands-on learner so I like to put theory and learning into practice. My role is varied and I love the level of responsibility I have. I am part of the team, contribute and work hard and constantly learning and pushing myself.”

College representatives will be touring the county throughout National Apprenticeship Week as part of the #FireItUp campaign and will be dropping into Northampton Academy, Ferrers School in Higham Ferrers, Manor School in Raunds and Wellingborough Job Centre to discuss apprenticeship opportunities.
