Level 2 Electrical/Electronic Engineering

City and Guilds offers two different sizes of electrical technical awards that incorporate common core mandatory units.

The Level 2 Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a smaller qualification (5 Units) which enables you to gain an introduction to electrical engineering theory and covers many practical skills.

The Level 2 Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a longer programme (6 Units) and would be beneficial if you wanted to specifically understand more about the use of hand tools associated with Electrical Installations, how to install Electrical Installations containment systems and wiring and terminating electrical circuits. There is also an introduction to electronics and electronic circuit building.

You will spend 50% of the course in the electrical/electronics workshop developing the skills required for electrical and electronics engineering.

The remaining 50% of the timetable will be classroom delivery of underpinning knowledge and portfolio-building.

The units you will study are likely to include:

Core Units:

• Unit 201 Working in engineering
• Unit 202 Principles of engineering technology
• Unit 221 Principles of electrical and electronics technology

Specialist Units:

• Unit 211 Maintaining electrical wiring support systems
• Unit 223 Wiring and testing electrical circuits
• Unit 224 Constructing, testing and fault finding electronic circuits

For the diploma you will successfully complete all six units.

All units are subject to change and may be withdrawn.

This course is ideal if you have an interest in following an Electrical route and want to learn about basic Electrical and Electronics Principles before going on to specialise in a particular field in Engineering and wish to gain a Level 2 qualification in engineering. It is a nationally recognised qualification which provides the springboard into an Electrical and Electronics Engineering career.

The two mandatory Units 201 and 202 are assessed by Online multiple-choice assessment. Units 211, 221, 223 and 224 are assessed by successfully completing City and Guilds devised assignments.

If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can. All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade 4 (C) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses). Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career. Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.

• The principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems

• The practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment

• The principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment.

• Apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment

• Apply health and safety and environmental regulations, guidance notes and relevant codes of practice
• Apply the requirements of the current edition of the wiring regulations.

• Work reliably and effectively without close supervision

• Work effectively with colleagues, other trades, clients, suppliers and the public

• Maintain and enhance competence in own area.

There may be opportunities to take part in trips and visits as part of your course. The approximate cost for this is £40, payable at enrolment.

Students will also be required to purchase overalls and safety boots for the workshop activities and these can cost approximately £50.

If you achieve all elements of your study programme you could apply for a Level 2 or Level 3 Electrical Installation course, an apprenticeship or employment.

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 including maths.
