This course is ideal if you have an interest in woodwork, creating, installing and fixing building components on a building site or commercial premises, and you are employed in a site carpentry role.

Site Carpentry Skills

• Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, finishing, positioning and securing.
• Install door and window frames, door and hatch linings, floor joist coverings, straight partitions and straight staircases
• Install doors, ironmongery, service encasements, wall and floor units and fitments, cladding and staircase components.
• Erect inclined roofs with gables, joists, roof coverings and roof components
• Repair or replace frames, mouldings, doors, windows, door and window ironmongery, roofing components, guttering and downpipes and window components.
• Use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment

Site Carpentry Knowledge

• Understand the technical principles of site carpentry work and how these are applied to prepare and fix timber and timber- based products, erect inclined roofs, maintain and repair building components.
• Understand how to form specific joints required for site carpentry work, such as mitres, butt and halving joints
• Understand why, when and how health and safety control equipment should be used when undertaking site carpentry work (e.g. personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
• Understand how to work safely at height and use access equipment correctly.

• Know how to use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment.

• The principles of environment, health, safety and welfare and how they must be applied
• Know how to interpret and produce relevant information from drawings, specifications and Work instructions including The basic principles of Computer Aided design (CAD)
• how to carry out first fixing work.

• identify and Apply safe working practices in accordance with current legislation, health, safety and welfare regulations
• carry out first fixing Work including Install timber frames and linings, coverings, flat roof decking, Install straight flights of stairs and erect timber stud partitions
• carry out second fixing Work including Install service encasement, cladding, wall and floor units and fitments.

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS:

• Scientific calculator, pencils, coloured pencils, black ink pens, ruler, maths set, rubber, coloured highlighters, A4 project book, A4 lever arch folder, narrow post-it index
• Navy polycotton apron
• Safety boots
• Safety specs (clear)
• No-cut gloves

After successful completion of this course you could progress within the carpentry and joinery industry or progress to a higher level qualification.

Applicants will typically hold:

• 4 x GCSEs grade 9-3

• Equivalent L1 qualifications appropriate to the apprenticeship

• Initial assessment (BKSB and free-writing) will demonstrate the applicant is working at Entry 3 for English and mathematics
• In the absence of the above, a professional discussion may be offered to confirm suitability for the programme and likelihood to achieve.

*All applicants will be invited for interview with an apprenticeship advisor and the employer

• Equivalent qualifications will be considered.
• In exceptional circumstances, applications which do not meet the formal entry criteria may be considered on an individual basis.

The interview process will include an informal advice and guidance session with one of our apprenticeship advisors in preparation for a formal interview with an employer (subject to suitability for the course and job).

You will need to bring copies of your certificates for any qualifications already achieved and a copy of your CV or application. You should also be prepared to sit English and maths assessments.
