The BTEC Level 3 in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering will allow you to enter the world of work or University. Many engineers who gain this qualification go on to University and read for a BSc in Engineering. In addition, the qualification is valid for progression to apprenticeships.
What will I study?
The Level 3 National Extended Diploma is equivalent in size to three A Levels. This qualification is recognised by industry as providing a good base as it includes elements of mechanical, electrical and electronics skills. This course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of Electronic Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 National Extended Diploma technical qualification in Engineering.
To help with theory content, extra lessons in the form of GCSE English and Mathematics may be available to give you further support. And will receive strong personal tutorial support. After successfully achieving this qualification, you can progress onto a Higher National Certificate, a Higher Apprenticeship, University or employment.

- Electronic Measurement & Testing
In year 1 students must complete all units and failure to do so could affect their opportunities for progression to year 2. Year 2 is more specialist, where you will have the opportunity to develop your area of interest and application to a Higher Education course.
Units you will study in year 2 are likely to include:
- Electrical Technology
- Engineering Project
- Principles & Applications of Analogue Electronics
- Further Engineering Maths
- Principles & Applications of Engineering Measurement Systems
- Electronic Circuit Design & Manufacture
- Further Electrical Principles
- Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems
You will finish by writing and completing a unit project and mounting an exhibition of your work.

Who is this course for?
This course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of General/Electronic Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.
The course is aimed at those who wish to either gain entry to University or those who wish to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable them to work in the industry.
How is the course assessed?
A process of continuous assessment involving unit assignments (normally three or four per unit) Assessment of each unit includes internally graded exams/coursework. There are strict deadlines for the completion of these throughout the academic year.
Your Study Programme
If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can. All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade 4 (C) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses).
Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career. Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.
You will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of:
- The awareness of health and safety regulations, relevance to the occupation and the machinist's responsibilities
- Engineering representations, drawings, graphical information and specifications
- Machining operations and techniques to produce complex components.
You will have the ability to:
- Comply with environmental, ethical and sustainability regulations and procedures
- Record information; paper based or electronic
- Apply machining operations and techniques to produce complex components with features.

Students will be expected to purchase some basic equipment relevant to the course. This will be conveyed to them in the form of a kit list, sent via email during the summer before they enrol.
Progression and Career Opportunities
On successful completion of this qualification students could continue their studies to a HNC in Engineering on a part time basis or by applying to University for a relevant degree programme. Or employment as an engineering technician. Specific areas of work could include specialist areas such as:
- Engineering technician
- Cad design technician
- Design engineer in high performance engineering
- Project leader
- Test and inspection
- Green technology
Entry Requirements for new students
- 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (A*-C) including Maths and English.
Current Level 2 Engineering students will require:
- Pass at Level 2
- 90% attendance
- Good behaviour record
- GCSE in Maths and English (both at grade 4)
