This course is the third one in the Level one programme. Students enrolling on this course should have completed the Level 1 Business Skills and Computerised Accounting. This course introduces students to the role of the bookkeeper and simple bookkeeping techniques. It covers the buying and selling process and the common documents used. The course also includes recording transactions in the books of prime entry. Students will develop an understanding of the manual bookkeeping process and be introduced to the concept of double-entry bookkeeping. This course lasts for five weeks with the exam being taken in the fifth week. Students will receive a certificate within six weeks of a successful exam result.

  • What will I study?

    The Level 1 in Bookkeeping has five learning outcomes:

    1. Understand the role of the bookkeeper
    2. Understand financial transactions
    3. Process customer and supplier transactions
    4. Process receipts and payments
    5. Understand the benefits and risks of using accounting software to complete bookkeeping tasks
  • Who is this course for?

    This course is ideal if you have completed the Level 1 Access Awards in Business Skills and Accounting Software or if you want to learn about the basics of Bookkeeping.

  • How is the course assessed?

    This course is assessed by a single computer-based exam with the results usually available the same day.

  • Your Study Programme

    Not applicable as this is a part-time course only available to students over the age of 19.

  • General info

    Students do not need any special materials other than a pen, paper and calculator. The use of a mobile phone as a calculator will not be permitted. As part of course, students will be required to register as a member of the AAT.

  • Progression and Career Opportunities

    After successful completion of this course you could progress to a trainee or apprenticeship role or the AAT Level 2 programme at the College.

  • Entry Requirements for new students

    Four GCSEs at grade E (2) or above.
    Successful completion of the AAT Level 1 Award in Business Skills and must have sat the Level 1 Access to accounting software exam.
