Your apprenticeship programme will be undertaken over 3 academic years on a day release basis, attending college one day per week. In your first year, you will learn basic Engineering skills at level 2. Your practical workshop sessions will cover Hand Fitting skills, how to operate a manual Lathe and Milling machine as well as learning assembly techniques, disassembling and reassembling a range of products.
In your second year, you will start your level 3 BTEC Advanced Mechanical Engineering Diploma which consists of 11 units, 6 of which are covered within this year and the following 5 units covered during your third year of attendance. During your second year, you will also start gathering evidence from your workplace, documenting the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours you are developing in your role as an apprentice in your workplace, and completing the 3 NVQ Diploma (Technical Support) core units.
During the third year of your apprenticeship, you will complete your remaining level 3 BTEC Engineering Diploma units (5) at college and continue documenting your final work-based NVQ Technical Support unit in your workplace.
Once you have successfully achieved your level 3 BTEC Engineering Diploma and level 3 NVQ Technical Support (Competence) qualification, you will progress onto your End Point Assessment (EPA).
To achieve the EPA, you will be required to complete 3 Performance reports, each reflecting your advanced Technical Support skills and finally participate in a Professional Discussion with your EPA assessor. Combined, these will determine if you have achieved the requisite Knowledge, Skills and behaviours to be recognised and certificated as a fully qualified Machining engineer.
