This course is designed to further extend the knowledge and ability of students wishing to continue their study in vehicle paint principles. The course is taught in our well equipped workshops and classrooms, it will involve completion of theoretical study using classroom delivery, assignments, phase tests and on-line multi-choice exams. The practical sessions require you to satisfy practical assessment criteria using pre-set tasks with the results recorded in a practical task workbook.

This course will continue to develop the skills obtained at Level 2. At least a third of the course is spent in the workshop developing your skills in the manufacture, repair and refinishing of motor vehicle bodies and components.

The course is normally delivered over three days a week.

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

  • What will I study?

    This Level 3 qualification covers both theory and practical aspects, including:

    Core Units:

    • The preparation and application procedures
    • The diagnosis and rectifying of paint faults
    • Working with plastic materials and components
    • Preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces
    • Establishing paint defects
    • Applying topcoats and completing refinishing
    • Colour matching

    All units are subject to change and may be withdrawn.

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is ideal for you if you have an interest in vehicle accident repair and have successfully completed the Level 2 Vehicle Refinishing course and wish to gain a Level 3 qulaification in vehicle accident repair.

    This VRQ provides the essential knowledge and skills for vehicle body paint operators working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist paint businesses.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The assessments are made up of three components which are set by IMI Awards:

    1. Practical tasks
    2. Online testing
    3. Written assignment/coursework
  • Your Study Programme

    If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme this could be a vocational or technical qualification. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can.

    Work experience will be part of your study programme and complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career.

    If you have chosen to study for a T Level qualification, this will involve college-based theory and practice lessons along with relevant work placement to enable you to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours that employers are looking for.

    Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.

    All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade 4 (C) at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses).

    You will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of:

    • The structure of the industry and how the business works from an operational perspective

    • The procedures for the maintenance of tools and the workshop

    • The implications and legal requirements of fitting accessories and carrying out vehicle modifications.

    You will have the ability to:

    • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine service serviceability

    • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures

    • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

    You will be expected to provide overalls, safety boots or shoes, writing equipment and a folder for your work.

    At your interview you will be provided with a preferred kit list that will assist you during your course. This kit will always belong to you is fully transferable to take with you in to employment.

    Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Accident Repair (Paint Principles) and GCSEs at Grade 3 in English Language and maths.
