This course really encourages you to think for yourself, to question the world around you and to see issues from a different point of view. This is valuable to most employers and universities.

  • What will I study?
    • Democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media, conservatism, liberalism, socialism.
    • The constitution, parliament, the Prime Minister and the executive, relations between the branches, nationalism
    • The state and globalisation, global governance (political/economic/human rights/environmental), power and developments, regionalism and the EU, comparative theories.

    The units you will study are likely to include: Unit 1: UK politics and core political ideas Unit 2: UK Government and non-core political ideas Unit 3: Global political issues

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is ideal if you have an interest in Politics and wish to gain an A Level qualification.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Three written exams covering each component at the end of the second year of the course.

    An A Level in Government and Politics provides an excellent background for careers in law, journalism, the caring professions, teaching, and a range of management and business areas.

  • Entry Requirements for new students

    The required point score to join our A Level programme is 4.25 across all your GCSEs. This must include a minimum of 5 grade 5s or above including a grade 5 or above in English Language and maths, with a grade 6 in another written subject desirable. An average point score will be calculated across your GCSE grades.

    A BTEC qualification at Merit grade, or above, in a related subject may also be considered in exceptional circumstances.
