Jobseekers in Northampton will have the chance to pick the brains of specialist staff from Northampton College and try their hand at a range of taster activities as part of a national ‘takeover day’ at Job Centres.
Up to 100 jobseekers are expected to benefit from the sessions being held at Jobcentre Plus in Lower Mounts between 9.30am and 12.30pm on Tuesday, 3 March.
All those attending the free drop-in session will be able to talk to the College’s specialist Futures team to get careers advice and find out more about apprenticeship vacancies and available courses for adult learners.
Taster sessions will include the chance to try out state-of-the-art VR headsets while students from the College’s Lower Mounts campus will be offering free haircuts and relaxing hand-to-arm massages at The Salon NC.
Jason Lancaster, principal of Northampton College, said: “Getting people into paid work is so important, not just for the local economy but for people’s overall wellbeing. Working gives you a sense of purpose and allows you to provide for your family and better contribute to society.
“We’re looking forward to meeting jobseekers and helping them navigate their way into the world of work through whatever route works best for them. It could be an apprenticeship, it could be a part-time course or it could simply be a case of improving their CV or interview skills.
“Jobcentre Takeover has become a proven model for engaging unemployed adults with careers advice, skills training, and pathways into work. It’s our first year taking part and the team is all set to make a positive difference.”
Jobcentre Takeover Day is part of a co-ordinated national initiative taking place during Association of Colleges’ National Colleges Week and National Careers Week. Originally developed by Weston College, the model brings together colleges and Jobcentre Plus to provide careers advice, skills support, and pathways into employment for unemployed adults.
Alongside Northampton College, the colleges participating this year include Weston College, Bath College, New City College London, and Middlesbrough College Group.
